Chapter Twenty-eight

Tess

The ride back to my apartment is quiet. Too quiet. Alexander will barely look at me, and certainly doesn’t seem in the mood for conversation. He has the radio cranked up to really ensure the silence between us.

I knew bringing him today was a huge risk, but he seemed to be doing fine. Everyone loved him, and he held his own really well. Even the twins seemed to be crazy about him.

But then, it was like a switch flipped, and suddenly, we are back to him being cold and distant.

He walks me up to my apartment once we get back, and the second we are inside, I can’t take anymore.

“You want to tell me what’s bothering you?” I ask.

“Nothing. I’m fine…”

“Bullshit!” I snap. “You’ve been weird ever since we left, and I want to know why.”

He rakes his fingers through his hair and starts to pace. “I just don’t know,” he mutters.

“You don’t know what?” My arms cross over my chest showing my defensiveness.

“I don’t know that I can ever be that guy who can give you that perfect life. I’m never going to be that guy who lives in the suburbs with his big family and white picket fence. I can’t give that to you.”

“I’m sorry, but who the hell asked you to? Have I said to you ‘Alexander, I would like to move to suburbs and play Mrs. Mom’?”

“No, but…”

“But what, Alexander? You and I have never even discussed the future, yet you presume to know what it is that I want. Not only that, but you proceed to run the other direction from your assumptions.” My volume is starting to rise as my anger boils.

He walks over to me, so we are face to face. “Isn’t it though? Don’t you want the whole package?”

I take a step back because when he gets close, it’s as if he invades all my senses, and I’m not able to think straight.

Taking a deep breath, I try to find the best way to put this so that he gets it through his thick skull. “Alexander, of course, I want the whole package, but who are you to tell me what my package is? Who’s to say that my ‘whole package’ looks the same as Sam’s. Because let me tell you, it doesn’t. You’re acting like I took you there and introduced you as my boyfriend and told everyone how we are going to ride off into the sunset. News flash…I didn’t. You’re acting like something has changed between us.”

“It has,” he says the words in barely more than a whisper.

“What? What has changed?”

He runs his fingers through his hair as he begins to pace. “Everything.”

“I’m going to need you to be more specific because I don’t get how so much changed in just a few hours.”

Finally, he stops to look at me. “It’s not just today. It’s been ever since I met you. I don’t chase after women, yet I showed up at your door. I don’t go out on dates, yet you and I go out damn near every night.
